Julie, entre autres / Julie, amongst others
A tragi-musical comedy
After « D’après J.-C.” (2004) and “Dalila et Samson, par exemple” (2006), Herman Diephuis continues to investigate in this project our cultural images, questioning a theme which is recurrent throughout art : the human condition. This new piece draws freely from the 1960’s blockbuster Hollywood musical comedy “The sound of music” by Robert Wise.
The film tells the story of a young Austrian governess, “Maria” played by Julie Andrews, and offers a sweetened vision of life just at the moment of the Nazi invasion of Austria.
A roaring success, the film’s songs continue to be re-made over and over.
The character of Julie Andrews / Maria is the central element of Diephuis’ piece and is interpreted by six performers who convey her enthusiasm, her buoyancy and her unfailing confidence in humanity. The film’s songs, in all their versions throughout the years, create the piece’s dramaturgy of this character played by six voices and six bodies. Confronted with these various musical genres and interpretations, and their accompanying socio-historic contexts, the character of Julie Andrews evolves, transforms through the life of the piece.
How do these transformations shape the bodies and voices of the six Julies ? What remains of her enthusiasm and charm, and how will her character resonate in today’s world ?
